Marijuana Legalization History, 1996 - 2020

Background: Since California first legalizing medical marijuana in 1996, most states in the United States have already legalized medical marijuana. Moreover, 15 states and the District of Columbia have fully legalized recreational marijuana by 2020.

Here we created a dynamic visualization to demonstrate the process of marijuana legalization in the United States from 1996 to 2020.

Prevalence by substance use disorders, 1990 - 2016

Background: Substance use disorders are very common globally. Around 1-in-7 people suffer from one or more disorders. The issue is more severe in the United States and several countries in Eastern Europe.

Background: Mental disorders, such as anxiety disorders and depression, are common issues globally. A large number of the population has either anxiety disorders or depression, even both.

Mental Health Correlation Matrix (Adult)

A correlation map shows the relationship between marijuana use and mental health in adults. The darker the grid is, the stronger the relationship between two attributes is.

The results show relatively weak correlations between different types of mental issues with marijuana (𝑟: 0.06∼0.13).

The analyses are based on questionnaires collected by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

This matrix illustrates the relationship between marijuana use and other drug abuses. The darker the grid is, the stronger the relationship between two attributes is.

Marijuana has a strong correlation with tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, and hallucinogens (cor-relation coefficient > 0.4).
